Over 100 years of never giving up

Since 1911, we've been improving mobility one innovation at a time. And there's no sign of us slowing down.

1911

Fearless race car driver Louis Chevrolet and businessman Bill Durant disrupt the automotive industry by co-founding Chevrolet in Detroit, Michigan.

1918

Chevrolet merges with General Motors, becoming its own powerful division within GM.

1923

GM takes on the world, opening its first assembly plant outside North America in Copenhagen, Denmark.

1926

GM organized the MENA region’s first Motor Show in Egypt that showcased all of its vehicles, including a trio of four-cylinder cars from Chevrolet. GM also opened their first office in the region. The Alexandria Egypt Dealer Organization, was established in 19 markets, which prospered until WWII.

1935

The birth of the first SUV and an Arabian Icon – Chevrolet Suburban. It has room for up to nine passengers and it’s our longest-running production nameplate.

1953

Chevrolet launches Corvette, America’s first mass-produced fiberglass sports car. To this day, it remains a champion on the track and a halo for our brand.

1955

Chevrolet introduces an engine so lightweight, high-revving and reliable, its legacy lives on in the V8 engines that power the vehicles we build today.

1956

GM regional office moved to Beirut. Remained there nearly 20 years, until the outbreak of the civil war in Lebanon.

1960

For the first of many years, Chevrolet outsells rivals, holding the title of America’s number-one truck.

1971

Chevrolet on the moon. “Lunar Rover” is the first electric-powered vehicle to help Apollo astronauts explore Earth’s satellite.

1980

Chevrolet launches its first front-wheel drive car. The Chevrolet Citation is shorter and lighter than the vehicle it replaced, yet refuses to sacrifice interior space.

1988

GM established its regional HQ in Dubai. General Motors Middle East Operations was opened up at the Dubai World Trade Center (also known as the Sheikh Rashid Tower), to ensure the sales and service needs for all customers in the region are met.

2000

Chevrolet Traverse debuts. Combining the comfort of a sedan with the utility of an SUV, it changes the way people think about family vehicles.

2011

Chevrolet North America launches the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid car. Volt establishes our brand as a leader in the future of electric cars.

2018

As technology finds new roads, so does Chevrolet. Future lies in electric vehicles – although for Chevrolet, it’s not actually that futuristic. Since the 1971 moon drive of the “Lunar Rover”, Chevrolet continues to pioneer EV engineering. This time with the Bolt EV, the electric vehicle that offers an NEDC-estimated up to 520 km range on a single charge.
